Last night I braved the crowds at the New York State Armory to get a glimpse of the backstage preparations for Marc Jacobs’ fall ’10 show. I caught up first with lead hairstylist Guido, creative consultant for Redken, who told me the first thing he did was cut each girl’s hair to a mid-chest length. “They let you cut their hair?!” I asked incredulously. “Sure,” he told me, “because all the girls want to be in Marc Jacobs’ show.” Guido kept the look simple, spraying the hair with water and Redken Fabricate 03 heat-active texturizer, then letting it air dry before brushing it through. “Marc wanted a feeling of easy sophistication,” Guido said.
Meanwhile, CND’s Jan Arnold told me they created five different custom-blended shades of polish for the show that she described as “greige”—grayish beige tones ranging from a stony concrete to a warm limestone—to match specific swatches of fabric from the collection. “At first Marc wanted to do 10 different shades,” she said, “but we eventually narrowed it down to five.”
Makeup icon Francois Nars was also on hand, creating a look he described as “sexy cool.” The look featured “tons” of mascara, lavender on some eyes and blue on others, lots of eyeliner, pale orange “dry” lips and matte skin.
