American Salon's Nicole Palmieri poses with Senses owner Antonio Rosa after receiving the La-Brasiliana treatment.

I recently had the opportunity to try La-Brasiliana‘s Keratin Treatment with Collagen at the hip Senses New York Salon & Spa in the Flatiron district in Manhattan. I’ve always dreamed of being able to wash my hair and let it dry naturally without it looking like I just got out of bed, but since my hair is neither stick-straight nor curly, I was convinced no treatment would ever allow me to do this—until now. I entered the salon and was first led to the shampoo area to be washed twice with a clarifying shampoo. Next, I sat down at the styling station and had my hair blown out leaving 10 percent dampness in the hair. Antonio, one of the owners of Senses, divided my hair into four sections and applied the treatment precisely, making sure my hair was completely covered. My hair was then blown out again with the treatment still in. Antonio then straightened my hair with a 450-degree flatiron, which seals in moisture, hydrates, and creates a glossy, completely straight finish. The entire process took about 2.5 hours, but the length and time varies depending on hair length and thickness, and the treatment results last anywhere from two to four months. Because the treatment is keratin-based, it is actually good for the hair and is supposed to dramatically reduce styling time, leave hair in its original healthy, shiny, and smooth state, eliminate frizz, and improve hair’s elasticity.

Before I left the salon, I was given strict orders not to wash my hair or even get it wet for four days. After the four days, I washed my hair with La-Brasiliana’s line of products designed to maintain and prolong the results of the treatment. I decided to put the treatment to the true test: I washed my hair and decided to let it dry naturally without using a hairdryer or a flat iron. To my surprise, I was delighted with the results. My hair naturally dried quicker than usual and it was left feeling silky smooth and frizz-free. It still has body and some wave to it, but I walked around all day loving the fact that I was able to “wash-and-go”—and still feel confident!

I second everything you wrote, Nicole. I did the La Brasiliana treatment on Friday and finally got to wash it out and see the results this morning—AMAZING! I was nervous to try the treatment at first because my fine hair lacks volume, and I was concerned about it being even flatter after the treatment, but to my surprise, without any styling products (or even a brush), my hair is straight, healthy and full of life today! Antonio and the staff at Senses were so friendly and welcoming and really made the long process completely painless, even for someone with the attention span of a pea …

I have a curly hair and I like them, but they are very very frizzy and dry. I have to apply a lot of mousse and serum to take out the frizz. I do have an appointment coming soon but I am scared to loose my curls. Would the treatment help without loosing the curls?

  7. Lori Morris, Senior Editor August 6, 2009 at 3:30 pm #

The keratin treatments on the market allow you to still wear your hair curly — they just hydrate the hair and make the curls more manageable. If you’re nervous about losing any curl, you could try an in-salon deep conditioning treatment to combat the dryness. At home, you should use a deep conditioning mask once a week (or more, depending on your hair) to add in moisture and help deal with frizz. You should definitely speak with your hairdresser about the different services and products that would work best for your particular hair type and texture.

    Hi!

I just had the treatment done a few hour ago, and so far my hair look nice and soft; I have read complaints about the treatment leaving a nasty smell, but so far I have no smell issue.

althoug what I want it was to have my hair straight, I chickend out and decided to go for La-Brasialiana since it would improve the condition of my hair. My hair is curly and dry that is why I went with this.

On friday I will wash it and will find out how good it is.

Just one glich, what kind of shampoo and conditioner works best with this product? should I use only the La-Brasialiana products? if so where can I get them in Manhattan? I forgot to ask the hair stylist, and I dont want to ask more questions, the lenguage barrier is dificult (we both speak broken english)

The La-Brasiliana shampoo, conditioner and styling products are great, and I’d imagine you could purchase them at the salon where you received your treatment. You can also try other sulfate-free brands like Pureology, Moroccanoil (they have a new shampoo and conditioner), Cibu, David Babaii for Wild Aid—or anything else that says “SULFATE-FREE” on the bottle. Enjoy!

I was under the impression that the hair products had to state” Sodium Free”. Do you agree?

I got the La brasiliana treatment exactly a year ago and it has not washed out of my hair like it said it would in 3 to 4 months. Instead it is groing out. So i have curly hair on top and the bottom half is still somewhat straight. I feel like I am the only one this has happened to. can you tell me why this is so? Please let me know your thoughts on this, Thanks

  12. Lori Morris, Senior Editor August 12, 2009 at 1:42 pm #

Lee, I’ve actually never heard of the product “washing out,” but since it’s not supposed to relax curls, there’s usually not a real line of demarcation like there can be with Japanese straightening. You should consult the stylist who performed the treatment.

when you say dissipates does that mean it slowly gets your hair back to its original state. For instance my hair that i said lost its curl does the curl slowly return? I know for sure that I had the brazilian straightner. Are there different types?

I recently had this protein hair relaxer at a salon in Reston, VA. They specifically told me to leave the product on for 48 hours. Is this not correct?

I had my hair done with the brasilliana keratin treatment and I didn’t get any of the results that everybody got. My hair was frizzy and kind of damage but now it’s horrible after the treatment. I don’t even have a word for it. Now it’s more damaged than before. It’s breaking and it’s tangle and dry. I don’t know what to do, nothing work now. Can somebody tell me what to do or what to use or I should do it again???

  32. Libby November 3, 2009 at 8:25 am #

I had this treatment done 2 weeks ago – it’s relatively new here in the UK. I was disappointed! My hair is wavy and tends to go frizzy in the damp weather so I thought it would be just the treatment to sort it out. After it was done and dried my hair felt like the other person said, as if mouse had been left in. After 4 days my hair felt so dirty and greasy that I was so glad to wash it to see the final results. All I can say is that it was ok. I still had to blow dry it and then use the straighteners to get a decent result. The treatment was “on offer” so I got it at a reasonable price but I won’t be having it done again at the full price. One thing I would like to know though, am I still ok to colour my hair with a semi-permanent? Anyone know?

Hi. I am a hairdresser in India and would lke to know if I can get the product available here. This is something which would work very well for Indian hair. What is different about the clarifying shampoo and its contents.

I am a stylist from Michigan. I took the LaBrasiliana class a few months back and I was sceptical at first about how great it was but have found that clients LOVE LOVE LOVE it. I finally got a chance to have it done to my hair today and I noticed one HUGE thing. If the product is not properly flat ironed into the hair it makes a HUGE difference. If not properly heated into the hair, the hair feels like there is a HUGE build up, or like there is product left in your hair. I had a second stylist go through my hair a second time, the proper way and my hair felt clean, and smooth, which it should. MAKE SURE the flat iron is run through completely so the product is properly sealed into the hair! Now that it is done right my hair feels GREAT. People were commenting about my hair for the rest of the day! My hair is already super straight and smooth but still feels like a great add on! Glad i had it done!

i would love to purchase some of the products on your hair treatment line its a wonderful product i have tried it before

  36. Est March 11, 2010 at 6:00 pm #

i have just had a rep visit my salon and im researching abit more and find the comments interesting..one thing the purchase of these products doesnt do is offer any training with the pack…incidently can you use any straightener…and if not why not??
it seems that if the service is not carried out properly or thoroughly there is a vast difference in the results..from wow..to yuk!! its so important to offer full and thorough training to avoid disappointment…
my salon is in buderim/australia and i am open and willing to offer this service…it sounds a revolution..if anyone is in the area and can show me the results id be grateful
    cheers
    Est x

I agree with Libby in England. I was hoping I would be able to wash and leave my hair but I’m disappointed with the result. My natural hair was quite pretty if I washed and left it but with this treatment my hair looks just like I haven’t spend £120 on it! I will need to blow dry it and use straighteners or curl it to smooth it out.

  38. Angela Allman April 10, 2010 at 10:40 am #

Can my hair be blow dried fist after applying the treatment and then straightened with the 450 flat iron. Or does the Flat iron has to be used first whilst hair is wet..I have just had the treatment done but i am not feeling that WoW factor i was expecting. My hair is afro carribean but very fine texture and usually, after a relax using phytospecific my hair looks and feel really glossy and soft. but it is now looking a bit dull, and it does not have that high sheen.. Is there a product in the range to advance a finishing gloss, I have used the serum and I think i have the full range.

  39. Sam May 3, 2010 at 3:14 pm #

Had the La-Braziliana treatment done last week. Washed it after 4 days…found it made no difference to my hair, only to my pocket. I have naturally straight hair with just a little waves at some place. Did not take out the waves at all and did not even take out the frizz either. Complete waste of $500.

Where do I get this product in South Africa? I’m interested for my market, please advise

  42. Linda May 26, 2010 at 1:09 pm #

I just had the keratin treatment done again for the second time…first one lasted about4 months or so. I have very curly FRIZZY hair that was almost impossible to manage and took too long to blow dry straight. I love this stuff!!! I can shower and go without doing a thing, it is just so soft and pretty. My curls are nice and big, and not wound up like corkscrew noodles. It is truly a dream to have this kind of hair FINALLY!!!

  43. Barbara May 27, 2010 at 10:35 pm #

I had the Keratin treatment done and it was wonderful, lasted about 5 months, but then the salon decided to use Copala (sp?) Keratin, and its not good at all. All the reviews about it say how great your hair looks and feels, but mine is still frizzy and dull. How many different Keratin treatments are there, and which in your opinion is best? Thanks

  44. Mona May 30, 2010 at 2:56 pm #

I just had the treatment yesterday in Vienna VA and my hair looks better today than yesterday, more body in it. The cost is a bit steep but if my hair lasts and continues to look as good then it would be worth it. My hairdresser said not to get it wet for 24 hours. From the previous comments, it appears that it is better to keep it away from water for 3-4 days. Which is more accurate?

  45. nicoleforever June 4, 2010 at 11:50 pm #

Hi,i was introduced to this product by my friend and her mom who is a hair dresser.Ive read all of the comments and wanted to know if this stuff works for African American Coarse Hair?
if you could reply that would be great:)

We have posted a African American textured hair client that received a La-Brasiliana treatment. She shampoos her hair at home 1 a week and her curl is relaxed and easily manageable. The La-Brasiliana treatment smooths, shines, softens, eliminates frizz and makes hair instantly more manageable

  47. Patty June 19, 2010 at 11:53 pm #

I have used La-Brasiliana treatment for about 1 1/2 years and I think is great!!! I love it!!! I have a very curly thin hair and the treatment made huge difference on it: no need for other straighteners, easier use of dryer or flatiron, shiny, no more frizz… I called it “the hair transplant”

  48. Patty June 19, 2010 at 11:54 pm #

And yuo can get all the products online (at least in US)

  49. Andrea July 14, 2010 at 1:08 pm #

I had the La Brasiliana treatment done and I love it! If you have African American, or like I do a mix of Caucasian and African American/Americcan Indian hair, which is very thick and wavy, I have always used a relaxer in my hair and it’s said that the Keratin treatment enhances and repairs the hair of chemically treated hair, as well as after coloring, or highlighting. Actually, I believe that it’s best if your roots are relaxed before getting the La Brasiliana treatment done, because the more you have the treatment done, which can be done once a month, if you can afford it, the better condition your hair will be in. (At least that is what I’ve read, or seen in videos). That being said, my hair has never felt so feather light in my life and nooooo frizzzzz!!! Love this treatment!

  50. Debbie G July 23, 2010 at 5:02 pm #

I am having the Keratin express treatment done on Saturday. I have thick curly fluffy hair that can be frizzy. This treatment is supposed to be a mini version of the original treatment. You don’t wash your hair for at least 24 to 48 hours. We’ll see.
