This month American Salon celebrated its 135th year and an entire crew of people participated in the cover shoot to ensure it would live up to the honor.

Here, we feature more behind-the-scenes pictures to showcase how the final product was achieved. Matrix Artistic Directors Brian and Sandra Smith created beautiful hairstyles for models Elizaveta and Catiane, ranging from cascading waves to glamorous up-dos; makeup artist Chico Mitsui complemented the dark hair color with dramatic red lips; and photographer David Byun captured the masterpieces on film. With the direction of American Salon Editor-in-Chief Kelley Donahue and Creative Director Jeannie Oberholtzer, as well as the help of fashion stylist Nikko Kefalas and assistants John Simonetti and Vicki Yeremchuk, this year’s anniversary is surely one to remember. —Aja Edwards
